From a very young age, I have loved the ocean. As I got older, I developed an indescribable love for boats. I got the opportunity one year while I was on a catamaran cruise to Nevis, to sail the boat! It was in that moment I suddenly knew that I wanted to one day become a captain. I engaged in a life changing conversation with the Captain - Ian 'Rumpy' Lake, where he sold me on the dream of becoming a captain.
Rumpy afforded me opportunities to join him on sails occasionally, where he would teach me more about sailing and the sea. I won't lie, I feel complete serenity when I am in that element. I became even more and more curious and started to make steps into becoming a captain. Fortunately and unfortunately though, as I was about to get my feet into the water and start courses, I became pregnant with my daughter. I devoted all of my time to her in her first years. Not wanting anything or anyone to distract me from spending time with her. Then, I felt like I was ready again to start this new journey on becoming a Captain and COVID hit! I was held back once again. Nevertheless, just August of this year, the opportunity came about and I wasted no time in grabbing it, I did the Seamanship Certification Course.
While doing the course I shared my interests with the instructor - Captain Ludel Harvey and my desire to become a Captain and how elated I was that I was to be on this journey. While engaging in this unforgettable conversation with Cpt. Harvey, he encouraged me to go even further than just having a Captain level license and head for the Pilot level. Of course, my immediate response was YES! He also shared with me that, if I pursue this, I would become the first female Pilot in St. Kitts & Nevis.
Follow me to hear more about my journey on becoming a Captain & Pilot - the first Pilot in St. Kitts & Nevis!
